Who Can Apply for a Dutch EU Blue Card?
Your employer can sponsor and apply for your European Blue Card in the Netherlands under three specific scenarios:

New Applicants & Short-Term Holders: You do not currently hold an EU Blue Card, or you have held one in another participating EU country for less than 12 months.

Long-Term Mobility Applicants: You have lived and worked with an EU Blue Card in another participating EU member state for at least 12 months and are now relocating to the Netherlands.

Asylum Status Transitions: You currently reside in a participating EU country under an asylum permit and are transitioning to a highly skilled corporate role in the Netherlands.
EU Blue Card Requirements for the Netherlands
To successfully qualify for a Dutch Blue Card, both the employee and the employer must meet strict criteria set by the Immigration and Naturalisation Service (IND):
1. Professional Qualifications & Education

Higher Education Degree: You hold a diploma from a higher education program that lasted at least 3 years. This degree must be directly relevant to your profession. (Note: Foreign degrees must be officially evaluated by Nuffic to determine their Dutch equivalent value).

Relevant Work Experience: You have at least 5 years of professional experience at a higher education level.

IT Professionals Exception: If you are an IT manager or professional, the requirement is reduced to a minimum of 3 years of relevant work experience gained within the 7 years prior to the application.
2. Employment Contract & Income

Contract Duration: You must have a valid employment contract with a Dutch company for a minimum of 6 months.

Salary Threshold: You must meet the official EU Blue Card income requirements for the Netherlands (updated annually).
3. Employer & Sponsor Requirements

Economic Activity: Your employer’s business must be actively operating and carrying out economic activity.

Clean Legal Record: The employer must not have received any fines in the past 5 years for violating Dutch labor laws, including the Foreign Nationals Employment Act (Wav), Minimum Wage Act (Wml), Working Hours Act (Atw), Working Conditions Act (Arbowet), State Taxes Act (Awr), or Waadi.
Recognised Sponsor status
💡 Recognised Sponsor Status: Your employer acts as your immigration sponsor. While the IND can grant an employer “Recognised Sponsor” status—which makes the application process significantly faster and easier for both employees and their families—this recognition is not a mandatory requirement for an EU Blue Card.
EU Blue Card Short-Term Mobility Rules
Do you need a visa for short business trips to the Netherlands? Not always. Under the short-term mobility rule, you do not need to apply for a Dutch work and residence permit if:

Your visit is for temporary work activities (e.g., attending conferences, business meetings, or short-term projects).

Your total stay in the Netherlands does not exceed 90 days within any 180-day period.
