The Portugal D8 Visa (Digital Nomad Visa) is a residence and stay permit designed for remote professionals who work 100% online, allowing them and their family members to legally live in Portugal while continuing their professional activities.

This visa is intended for non-EU/EEA/Swiss remote employees of foreign companies as well as self-employed professionals or freelancers who provide services to clients or entities located outside of Portugal.

Basic Requirements

Minimum documentation

    • Non-EU and non-EEA citizen
    • Valid passport
    • Over 18
    • No criminal record
    • Proof of remote employment or your freelance jobs
    • Proof of accommodation
    • Proof of an adequate health insurance

    Minimum Income Requirement

    Minimum gross monthly income of €3,680, which equals four times the official Portuguese minimum wage in 2026, with +50% of minimum wage, plus:

    • +50% for a spouse

    • +30% per dependent child

     

    Beyond meeting the monthly income threshold, you are also required to show proof of adequate savings.

    Who can apply for the Spain Digital Nomad Visa?

    Non-EU/EEA citizens that want to reside in Portugal while working remotely for employers or clients abroad.

    Visa types

    Portugal offers two paths:

    Temporary stay visa:

    • Valid up to 12 months with multiple entries. 
    • Renewal: up to 4 times

    Long term residency visa

    • Valid for 4 months (entry visa)
    • You must apply for residence permit upon arrival.
    • It can be extended for more 3 years.

    There are differences between the two regagaridng the family reunitification rules and to paths to citizenship.

    Processing time

    Consular Processing (Initial Entry Visa)

    Official SLA: 30 to 60 days. Real-World Reality: 60 to 90 days (2–3 months)

    This is the process to receive a 4-month temporary entry visa in your passport.

    AIMA Appointment (Residence Permit Conversion)

    Official SLA: 90 days.

    Real-World Reality: 3 to 9+ months depending on the location.
