Overview

The Dutch American Friendship Treaty

The Dutch American Friendship Treaty (DAFT), signed on March 27, 1956, was designed to strengthen economic ties between the United States and the Netherlands. Today, it offers American entrepreneurs a unique and accessible opportunity to live and work in the Netherlands by starting a business.

Under DAFT, U.S. citizens can apply for a residence and work permit that is directly linked to a self-owned business in the Netherlands. Unlike the standard Dutch self-employed visa, DAFT does not require a complex point-based assessment of your business’s economic value. This makes it one of the most straightforward immigration options for U.S. entrepreneurs.

Whether you’re a freelancer or a business owner expanding internationally, the DAFT visa provides a fast-track to living and working in the Netherlands. Here’s how to get started—step by step.
